Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-79 It's Sage – glossy glaze for greenware, bisque and stoneware
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-79 It's Sage is a glossy, opaque ceramic glaze in a 236 ml pot. You apply it to damp clay, bisque or stoneware to create areas of colour, lines and designs. It is a solid colour and fires glossy even without an additional clear glaze.
The glaze stays where you put it. This helps with crisp lines and multicoloured designs. When fired from cone 6 upwards, however, designs may run. All colours in the Stroke & Coat series can be mixed with one another and thinned with water or medium.
Application and coverage
The number of coats determines the result: one coat is translucent, while 2–3 coats give full coverage with It's Sage. Let each coat dry before applying the next to keep lines clean. If you thin the glaze, you get softer gradients and transparent effects. You can mix your own shades with other colours in the series.
- 1 coat: slightly transparent
- 2–3 coats: opaque
- Thinned: transparent effects and soft gradients
Firing and choosing a cone
The glaze is formulated for cone 06/05 (approx. 998 and 1031 °C respectively, guide values per Orton chart) and can be fired up to cone 10, according to Mayco. At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) It's Sage stays opaque, but the colour becomes slightly darker. The behaviour at cone 6 is shown on the label of each colour. If you work at mid or high fire, make a test piece with your own clay and kiln first, as fine designs can run there.
Dinnerware and seal
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means that the product is exempt from hazard labelling.
