Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-43 Lettuce Alone – glossy brush-on ceramic glaze
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-43 Lettuce Alone is a highly pigmented, thick ceramic glaze for brushstrokes and opaque coverage, 236 ml. You apply it to damp clay, bisque-fired earthenware or bisque-fired stoneware. The glaze stays where you put it, so it suits lines, details and multicoloured designs.
According to Mayco, Stroke & Coat is formulated for cone 06/05 (cone 06 approx. 998 °C, cone 05 approx. 1031 °C, guide values per Orton chart). It can be fired from cone 06 to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), in oxidation or reduction.
Application, coverage and mixing
One coat of Stroke & Coat looks translucent, and each further coat increases the coverage. Mayco recommends 2–3 coats for full coverage. Let each coat dry before applying the next. The glaze fires to a glossy surface, so you do not need an additional clear glaze. The colours in the series can be mixed with each other. Thinned with water, they give softer, watercolour-style washes. Leave the base of the piece free of glaze, otherwise it will stick to the kiln shelf.
Firing and high firing
In the cone 06/05 range, you fire the glaze as it is formulated. At higher temperatures, according to Mayco, most colours in the series keep their shade, but with some colours the colour or transparency changes. You should therefore test how SC-43 behaves in a stoneware firing on a test piece, using your own clay and your own kiln.
Dinnerware
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. The AP seal (Approved Product) means, according to ACMI, that no hazard labelling is required. Both require that you apply and fire the glaze completely and as intended.
