Jesmonite AC730 Base Old Terracotta – weatherproof casting compound for outdoor and indoor use

Jesmonite AC730 Base in Old Terracotta is the powder component of a fast-setting, acrylic-polymer-modified cementitious composite for casting indoors and outdoors. Mixed with AC730 Liquid, it makes a casting compound that, according to the manufacturer, is suitable for small castings, garden ornaments and water features. The Base contains aggregates and pigments, so the Old Terracotta colour comes straight from the pack.

The compound is shrinkage-compensated and has low permeability. According to the data sheet, it withstands all external weathering and survives 300 freeze-thaw cycles. Thanks to its low free lime content and low alkalinity, it effloresces much less than conventional Portland cement systems. That matters if garden figures or planters are to stand outdoors permanently. The fire classification under EN 13501-1 is A2-s1-d0.

Mixing AC730 correctly

AC730 is a two-component system: the Base is mixed with AC730 Liquid, never with water. Weigh both components accurately, as the ratio determines strength and durability. Wear safety glasses and gloves when mixing and avoid dust.

• Mixing ratio: 5 parts Base to 1 part Liquid, by weight
• Stir the Base slowly into the liquid
• Then mix for approx. 60 seconds at about 1,000 rpm with the high-shear mixing blade
• Without accurate scales and a mixing blade, strength and durability may suffer

Use and surface finish

According to Jesmonite, AC730 is mainly a laminating compound for outdoor use, usually with glass fibre reinforcement. Open moulds and solid castings are also possible. The surface only acquires the typical stone look after acid etching (no earlier than 24 hours) or sandblasting. Store the Base dry at 5–25 °C.
