Prym elastic sewing thread in Sand – stretchy for cuffs, hats and gathering

Prym elastic sewing thread in Sand is a very stretchy thread, 0.5 mm thick. You knit or crochet it in as a carry-along yarn so that cuffs, hats and wrist warmers stay elastic. It comes ready wound on a sewing machine spool with 20 m of thread and can also be used on the sewing machine to gather fabric or stabilise individual areas.

According to Prym, the thread is made of 50% elastane and 50% polyamide. The high elastane content gives the strong stretch. A groove on the base and lid of the spool holds the thread in place while you are not working.

Using the thread

When knitting and crocheting, run the elastic sewing thread alongside the main yarn, especially for cuffs, hat edges and wrist warmers. This way the pieces draw back in after stretching. Knit a small tension swatch to see how much the stitches pull in.

On the sewing machine

To gather or stabilise, use the spool directly on the sewing machine, provided it fits your machine. Sew a test seam on a fabric offcut first, as stitch length and fabric determine how much the area draws in. Use the groove on the spool to secure the end of the thread so that nothing unwinds.
