Goerg & Schneider Clay Body 374 – Grey Stoneware with Black Grog

Goerg & Schneider Clay Body 374 is a grey to black-firing stoneware clay developed for hand-building, modelling and free-form ceramic work. It contains 25% black grog with a particle size of 0 to 0.5 mm, providing a good balance of plastic workability and reliable dimensional stability.

The clay is particularly suitable for building small to medium-sized vessels, figures, sculptures and decorative ceramic objects. It can be used for a variety of hand-building methods, including coil building, slab building, pinch techniques and free modelling.

One of the clay body's distinctive features is its temperature-dependent fired colour. At lower firing temperatures, it develops lighter shades of grey. As the firing temperature increases, the body becomes progressively darker, changing from anthracite to black. This makes Clay Body 374 an excellent choice for modern ceramics, contrasting glazes and pieces with intentionally exposed clay surfaces.

Black Grog for Expressive Ceramic Surfaces

The black grog provides additional stability while also offering interesting decorative possibilities. When the leather-hard surface is carefully wiped with a damp sponge, some of the black grog particles can be exposed. This creates a lively, slightly textured surface with visible dark speckles.

How does the colour change during firing?

At lower firing temperatures, the clay develops lighter grey shades. As the temperature rises, the body becomes darker and may appear almost black at 1200°C. The precise result also depends on the firing cycle, kiln atmosphere and final temperature.

Is Clay Body 374 suitable for wheel throwing?

Goerg & Schneider classifies Clay Body 374 as a hand-building and modelling clay. Clay bodies specifically developed for throwing are generally more comfortable for regular use on the pottery wheel. The recommended application for this clay is building small and medium-sized pieces.

Is this an air-drying clay?

No. Although the clay becomes firm as it dries, it only develops its final strength, density and fired colour after firing in a suitable ceramic kiln. It should not be confused with self-hardening modelling clay.

Our experience: Dark clay bodies can significantly influence the final appearance of a glaze. Transparent and semi-transparent glazes may appear considerably darker or develop different colours than they would on white clay.

Our tip: Always test glazes and surface techniques on a sample piece at the intended firing temperature. To expose the black grog, carefully wipe the leather-hard surface with a damp sponge.
