Clay Body 551 – Red-Firing Stoneware Clay with 40% Grog
Clay Body 551 is a high-quality, red-firing stoneware clay designed for stable and durable ceramic work. It contains 40% fine grog with a particle size of 0 to 0.2 mm, giving the clay excellent strength while remaining pleasant to work with. It is suitable for hand-building small to medium-sized objects as well as throwing larger pieces on the pottery wheel.
Depending on the firing temperature, the clay develops a warm light red to dark red body colour. Its natural red tone remains clearly visible even at higher temperatures, making it especially attractive for unglazed surfaces and ceramic work where the fired clay body is part of the design. With a firing range of 1000°C to 1220°C, it can be used across a broad temperature range.
Stable Clay for Throwing and Hand-Building
The high grog content gives Clay Body 551 excellent stability and helps larger or taller pieces retain their shape. This makes it particularly suitable for building medium-sized ceramic objects and throwing larger vessels. At the same time, the fine grog particle size produces a comparatively smooth surface that can be finished and refined easily.

Our experience: Red-firing stoneware clay is particularly suitable for ceramic work where parts of the natural clay body remain visible. Glazes should always be tested on a sample tile first, as the red clay body may influence the final glaze colour.
Our tip: Larger pieces and objects with different wall thicknesses should be dried slowly and evenly. This helps reduce the risk of stress cracks during drying and firing.
