Clay Body 371 – Grey-Black Stoneware Clay with 25% Grog

Clay Body 371 is a versatile grey to black-firing stoneware clay containing 25% fine grog. Its particle size of 0 to 0.2 mm provides good stability while allowing the clay to remain pleasantly plastic and easy to work with.

The clay body is particularly suitable for throwing on the pottery wheel, including larger vessels and ceramic objects. It can also be used for hand-building, modelling and free-forming small to medium-sized pieces.

One of its most distinctive features is the firing colour, which changes depending on the temperature. At lower firing temperatures, the clay develops a grey to anthracite body colour. As the firing temperature increases, the colour becomes progressively darker and may develop into a deep black. This makes Clay Body 371 an excellent choice for modern ceramics, contrasting glazes and pieces with visible unglazed surfaces.

Stable Stoneware Clay for Throwing and Hand-Building

The combination of good plasticity and fine grog makes the clay easy to shape while helping finished pieces retain their form. When throwing, the clay offers good stability, while the fine particle size produces a comparatively even surface.

Our experience: Dark-firing clay bodies can significantly influence the appearance of a glaze. Light, transparent and semi-transparent glazes may appear stronger, more muted or different in colour when applied over a dark clay body.

Our tip: Always test the glaze on a sample tile at the intended firing temperature before applying it to the finished piece. This helps you assess the final colour and the interaction between the glaze and the dark clay body.
