Goerg & Schneider Clay Body 284 – Stoneware with 25% Grog

Goerg & Schneider Clay Body 284 is a plastic, white to light cream-firing stoneware clay developed for hand-building and free modelling. With 25% grog and a particle size of 0 to 1.0 mm, it provides a balanced combination of workability, stability and a naturally textured surface.

The clay body is particularly suitable for building medium-sized vessels, figures, sculptures and decorative ceramic objects. It can be used for a variety of hand-building methods, including slab building, coil building and free-form modelling. The grog content helps pieces retain their shape and is especially useful when creating taller, wider or more detailed work.

Depending on the firing temperature, the clay develops a white to light cream fired colour. Its light body provides a versatile base for coloured, transparent and opaque glazes. It is also an attractive choice for ceramic work where parts of the natural clay surface are intentionally left unglazed.

Stable Hand-Building Clay for Medium-Sized Ceramic Work

The broad firing range from 1000°C to 1280°C allows the body to be used at both earthenware and stoneware temperatures. Glazes must always be selected to suit the chosen firing temperature and the clay body. As the firing temperature rises, the body becomes increasingly dense and its water absorption decreases.

Is Clay Body 284 suitable for wheel throwing?

Goerg & Schneider primarily classifies Clay Body 284 as a hand-building and modelling body. Due to its particle size of up to 1.0 mm, it is mainly intended for hand-formed work. Finer throwing bodies or combined throwing and hand-building clays are generally more comfortable to use on the pottery wheel.

Is this clay suitable for beginners?

The grog content supports the piece and can make hand-building easier. However, the particle size is more noticeable than in finely grogged clay bodies. It is particularly suitable for beginners who want to build stable vessels, figures or simple sculptures.

Our experience: Grog particles of up to 1.0 mm give the surface a natural, slightly textured appearance. For a smoother finish, the surface can be carefully compressed or refined when the clay reaches the leather-hard stage.

Our tip: Allow medium-sized pieces and objects with varying wall thicknesses to dry slowly and evenly. Joins, attached elements and base areas should be carefully compressed and protected from drying too quickly.

Glaze and functional ware information: Always test glazes on a sample piece at the intended firing temperature. Whether the finished ceramic is suitable for food or beverages also depends on the glaze, firing process and complete maturation of the clay and glaze.
