Goerg & Schneider Clay Body 364 – Red-Firing Hand-Building Clay

Goerg & Schneider Clay Body 364 is a plastic, light red to dark red-firing stoneware body developed for hand-building, modelling and free-form ceramic work. With 25% grog and a particle size of 0 to 0.5 mm, it combines good workability with reliable dimensional stability.

The clay is particularly suitable for building small to medium-sized vessels, figures, sculptures and decorative ceramic objects. It can be used for coil building, slab building, pinch techniques and free modelling. The grog provides additional support and is especially useful when creating taller, wider or more strongly shaped pieces.

The fired colour changes according to the firing temperature. At approximately 1070°C, the body fires light red; at 1140°C, it develops a red colour; and at 1200°C, it becomes dark red. This makes it possible to create both warm terracotta effects and deeper red ceramic surfaces. Unglazed sections show the natural fired colour particularly well.

Stable Red Clay for Figures and Sculptures

The particle size of up to 0.5 mm creates a naturally textured surface without feeling excessively coarse. The body is therefore suitable for well-defined figures and sculptures as well as decorative vessels and freely modelled ceramic work.

Is Clay Body 364 suitable for wheel throwing?

Goerg & Schneider classifies Clay Body 364 primarily as a hand-building and modelling body. Clay bodies specifically developed for throwing are generally more comfortable for regular use on the pottery wheel. The intended applications of this body are hand-building and modelling.

Is this an air-drying clay?

No. Although the clay becomes firm as it dries, it only develops its final strength and fired colour after firing in a suitable ceramic kiln. It should not be confused with self-hardening modelling clay.

Is the clay suitable for beginners?

The grog content supports the clay and can make hand-building easier. It is therefore also suitable for beginners who want to make figures, bowls or simple sculptures by hand. A finer ungrogged body may be more suitable for extremely small and delicate details.

Our experience: The natural red surface looks particularly attractive when selected sections are intentionally left unglazed. Transparent and semi-transparent glazes may appear very different on the red body than they do on white clay.

Our tip: Always test glazes on a sample piece at the intended firing temperature. Larger figures and pieces with varying wall thicknesses should be dried slowly and evenly to reduce the risk of drying cracks and internal stress.
