The Schmincke HORADAM Naturals set (art. no. 86 002 097) contains five watercolour paints in 15 ml tubes for painting on paper and card. The paints are based on gum arabic and contain only natural earth pigments. They are matt and mostly semi-transparent, combining properties of watercolour and gouache: diluted, you paint transparent glazes; used neat, you get a stronger, more matt application. The paints are vegan and have a mild smell.

The set contains five shades: 530 Celadonite, 620 Yellow Ochre, 650 Lalvarite Violet, 680 Caucasus earth and 720 Green Slate. That makes 5 tubes with a total of 75 ml. Naturals paints can be mixed and combined with all watercolour and gouache paints. If five shades are not enough for you, you can add paints from your own collection to the set.

Working with Naturals paints

Squeeze a little paint from the tube onto a palette and pick it up with a damp brush. With plenty of water you get translucent glazes; with little water or neat, a denser, more matt application. Because the paints remain water-soluble after drying, you can reactivate dried-on residues on the palette later. Mixing with watercolour or gouache paints creates further shades without changing the binder.

Which paper and subjects?

The paints are intended for paper and card, so for a sketchbook, watercolour pad or cards. The earthy shades suit landscapes, stones, botanical subjects and calm natural motifs. As the paints are mostly semi-transparent, the paper shows through and layers can be built up on top of each other.
