The Hahnemühle Britannia watercolour pad in 30 × 40 cm has 12 sheets of 300 gsm paper and is made for watercolour and other wet techniques. The natural white paper is acid-free, lightfast and age-resistant. The pad is glued on four sides, so the paper stays stretched on the pad while you paint.

According to Hahnemühle, the 300 gsm paper lies very flat after wetting. The hard surface lets you apply paint easily. You can paint wet-in-wet and let colour gradients blend softly into each other. Washes, gouache, tempera and acrylic can also be used on Britannia.

Working with the pad

Leave the sheets together on the pad while you paint and only detach the sheet once the painting is completely dry. The paper then stays flat even with generous, wet washes. To detach it, carefully run a blunt knife or palette knife along the glued edge. For wet-in-wet painting, first dampen the sheet with a brush and apply the colours to the still-damp surface. They will then blend softly into each other.

Which size and surface?

At 30 × 40 cm, you have enough room for landscapes and still lifes, yet the pad is still easy to transport. Britannia is also available in the series in 24 × 32, 36 × 48 and 42 × 56 cm. According to Hahnemühle, the range is offered in rough, cold-pressed (matt) and hot-pressed (satin) surfaces.
