Schmincke Blue Glazing and Gloss Medium – more transparency and gloss for oil paints

Schmincke's Blue glazing and gloss medium (NORMA Blue) is a very fat painting medium for water-mixable oil paints. It can be thinned with water, increases transparency, adds gloss and smooths brush marks. You can use it for glazes and glossy top layers. Undiluted, it can also be used with traditional oil paints.

The 60 ml bottle is enough to get started and to try the medium out. You decide the dosage yourself, as the medium has a noticeable effect even in small amounts.

How to use the medium

Shake the bottle before use and close it again straight afterwards. Use the medium only in the upper paint layers. Paint the base with less medium and the top layers with more: the fatter the upper layer, the lower the risk of cracking. Add the medium to the paint gradually and test the effect on a swatch, as there is no fixed mixing ratio.

What each effect is for

You need the higher transparency for glazes, where lower paint layers should show through. The increased gloss makes final layers richer. The fact that the medium smooths brush marks means that brush strokes are less visible, which helps with finely graduated areas. With water-mixable paints, brushes and palette are easier to clean with water.

Handling oils safely

Rags and paper towels soaked in oil can ignite spontaneously. Collect them in a sealable metal container or let them dry spread out before you dispose of them.
