Schmincke NORMA Blue Medium 2 – slow-drying painting medium for water-mixable oil paints
Schmincke Medium 2 Blue is an oil-rich ("fat") painting medium for NORMA Blue water-mixable oil paints. It can be thinned with water and slows drying. That gives you more time for wet-in-wet painting, for example for soft transitions in portraits, skies or skin tones.
The high oil content increases gloss and forms a soft, flexible paint film. You can also use the pure medium with traditional oil paints.
Working with Medium 2
Put a little medium on the palette and mix it with the paint until it flows smoothly. Schmincke recommends not exceeding a mixing ratio of 1:1 if possible. More medium does not automatically make the paint better, and can make the film too oily. The slower drying helps above all on larger areas and when blending, because the paint stays open for longer. When working in several layers, the rule is "fat over lean": the upper layers may contain more medium than the lower ones.
Medium 2 or Medium 3?
The NORMA Blue range also includes Medium 3 Blue. According to Schmincke, it has a medium oil content and speeds up drying. So choose Medium 2 when you need more time to paint, and Medium 3 when the layers should dry through faster.
