Schmincke LINO-Lasur – medium for more transparent lino printing ink

Schmincke LINO-Lasur is a binder-rich medium that you mix into lino printing ink to make the colour more transparent. This lets you print glazes and colour gradients without mixing up a new colour. The tube contains 35 ml and is based on gum arabic.

According to the manufacturer, LINO-Lasur is meant to be mixed into the ink, not used neat for overprinting. The medium is water-based and made in Germany.

Using LINO-Lasur

Put some lino printing ink on a palette or glass plate and mix the medium in thoroughly with a palette knife until the colour looks even. Schmincke recommends at least 1 part medium to 5 parts ink. The more medium you add, the more transparent the colour becomes. The medium is used straight from the tube and is not thinned with water. Then apply the mixture to the printing block with a roller as usual.

Good to know

Because of the transparency, the result depends on the paper and on the colour underneath. Light colours look especially translucent on white paper, and when you print a second layer over a colour that is already printed, the tones blend. Do a test print on your paper first so you can choose a suitable mixing ratio.
