Copic Ciao Marker 5+1 Set Pastel Colours – Alcohol Markers

Copic Ciao Marker 5+1 Set – five pastel shades plus a multiliner

The Copic Ciao Marker 5+1 Set Pastel Colours contains five alcohol markers in soft shades and a black multiliner. It suits illustrations, scribbles and storyboards. The colours are Y21 Buttercup Yellow, B60 Pale Blue Grey, G000 Pale Green, RV13 Tender Pink and E95 Tea Orange. According to Copic, the Ciao is an entry-level graphic marker.

Each marker has two nibs: a medium chisel nib for filling areas and drawing straight edges, and a brush nib for soft strokes and gradients. The ink is alcohol- and dye-based, dries quickly and does not smudge. So you can carry on working at a good pace without the colour smearing.

Working with the set

Sketch first in pencil, then go over the outlines with the multiliner. According to Copic, its pigment ink does not bleed on contact with water once fully dry. Even so, wait until the lines are dry before colouring them in with the markers. Fill areas with the chisel nib in overlapping strokes while the edge is still wet. This stops streaks from forming. Use the brush nib for soft strokes and transitions. Alcohol ink can bleed through thin paper, so place a sheet or mat underneath.

Choosing and refilling

With yellow, blue-grey, green, pink and orange, this set covers light, soft shades. The sister set with greys is better suited to shading. The markers can be refilled with Copic Ink, which according to the manufacturer comes in 180 colours. This way a favourite shade lasts longer.
