Mayco Stoneware SW-179 Muddy Waters – brown crystal glaze that melts to blue
With the Mayco stoneware glaze SW-179 Muddy Waters, you glaze ceramics in a matt brown with crystals. During firing, the crystals melt to a glossy blue. The more crystals you apply, the greater the colour variation on the piece.
According to Mayco, the glaze is suitable for the stoneware range from cone 5 to 10. It works best within this range. In a reduction firing at cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), the glossy blue becomes more dominant and the glaze shows more movement.
Controlling the crystal effect
The amount of crystals determines how lively the surface becomes. If you apply more crystals, the colour variation is greater. If you want a more subtle effect, first apply two coats of SW-174 Leather. According to Mayco, this is the base glaze. SW-179 Muddy Waters follows as the third coat.
Application and firing
Mayco advises against spraying the glaze. Apply it with a brush instead. Let each coat dry before applying the next. At cone 10 in a reduction firing, the glaze shows more movement. Leave a little space at the foot of the piece and place it on a protected kiln shelf. A test piece made from your own clay will show you beforehand how strongly the blue and the crystals come through in your firing.
