Chenille stems (pipe cleaners) in Ø 8 mm are bendy wires with a soft synthetic covering for craft projects. You get 100 pieces, each 50 cm long, in an assorted mix of colours. They can be made into animals, figures, flowers or decorations.

At 8 mm thick, the stems feel pleasantly chunky and plush, yet still bend easily into shape. The 50 cm length gives you enough material for larger shapes. For small details you can cut the wires shorter.

Working with chenille stems

Bend the wire into shape with your fingers. For legs, arms or antennae, twist two pieces around each other to make the shape more stable. To shorten them, use wire cutters or an old pair of scissors, as the wire core will blunt good fabric scissors. The cut ends can be prickly, so bend them inwards or wrap them over. You can join individual parts by twisting them together or with a drop of hot glue.

Which thickness to choose

Ø 8 mm suits sturdy bodies, caterpillars, flower stems and larger decorative figures. For fine details such as antennae or small faces, you would usually reach for thinner chenille stems, and for very bulky shapes, thicker ones.
