Plaster mould for espresso cup – small mould for slip casting
With this plaster mould you can cast small ceramic espresso cups from casting slip. The mould is approx. 6 cm high and compact: it suits miniatures, collectable cups and decorations as well as batches of identical pieces.
Plaster is absorbent and draws water out of the casting slip at the wall. This forms a firm layer, and you can cast many identical cups from one mould. The piece shrinks as it dries and is fired, so the finished cup comes out slightly smaller than the mould.
Casting a cup
The mould must be dry and free of dust so that the plaster can absorb water. Fill it to the rim with well-stirred casting slip and leave it to stand until a layer has formed at the wall. The casting time depends on the slip and the plaster mould. Then pour out the excess and leave the piece to stiffen in the mould. Once it is firm enough, remove it, trim the seams and let it dry completely before firing.
Caring for the plaster mould
Plaster absorbs moisture. Let the mould dry out completely between two castings, otherwise it absorbs less water and the wall will be thinner. Do not expose it to damp and store it in a dry place.
