Botz Stoneware Engobe 9825 Bamboo – matt green engobe for 1180–1280 °C

Botz Stoneware Engobe 9825 Bamboo is a plain green engobe for decorating stoneware, supplied in an 800 ml tin. It covers well, has a soft, earthy matt finish without glaze and gives sharp contours. It belongs to the Botz Edition range and stays stable across the whole firing range of 1180 to 1280 °C.

If you apply a clear glaze such as Botz 9300 or 9870 over it, the colour becomes brighter and glossy. For tableware, Botz recommends using the engobes in combination with a suitable glaze, depending on the glaze used. The Edition colours can be mixed with one another, so you can mix your own shades of green. According to Botz, they also cover dark clay bodies.

Application

The engobe works on leather-hard and on bisque-fired clay. Here is how to use it:

• Stir the tin well so that the colour pigments are evenly distributed
• Apply 2–3 coats with a brush
• Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next
• For a glossy surface, then apply one coat of clear glaze such as Botz 9300 or 9870
• Fire within the firing range of 1180–1280 °C; Botz shows its examples fired at 1250 °C

Matt or glossy: which finish do you want?

Applied on its own, Bamboo stays a soft matt with sharp contours, which suits fine lines, patterns and designs with a clean edge. Under a clear glaze, the green becomes more intense and glossy. As the Edition colours can be mixed, you can tone Bamboo down or shift it with other shades from the range. Make a test piece from your own clay first, so you can see how the colour looks in your firing.
