Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-10 Teal Next Time – glossy glaze for clay and bisque

Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-10 Teal Next Time is a glossy ceramic glaze that you apply to damp clay, earthenware bisque or stoneware bisque. It suits fine lines, details and multicoloured designs, as according to Mayco the colours can sit side by side without running. The bottle contains 236 ml (8 oz).

After firing, the surface is glossy even without an additional clear glaze. According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP seal means: exempt from hazard labelling.

Applying the glaze

Stir the glaze well before use and brush it onto the clean, dust-free surface. According to Mayco, one coat fires translucent; for full opacity Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. Let each coat dry before you apply the next. Because the glaze does not run, you can put areas of colour directly next to each other or layer lines and patterns over them. A common mistake is applying one coat too thickly: several thin coats give a more even finish.

Mixing and thinning

The colours in the Stroke & Coat range can be mixed with each other. According to Mayco, thinning with water gives transparent, watercolour effects, which you can use to create soft transitions.

Firing

The glaze is formulated for cone 06/05 (cone 06 approx. 998 °C, cone 05 approx. 1031 °C, in each case a guide value per Orton chart). According to Mayco, the range can be fired from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), in an oxidising or reducing atmosphere. The colour may change in a high firing: with some colours in the range it becomes lighter or more transparent at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart). If you want to fire high, make a test piece first.
