Nippon Gold Tape – rice paper masking tape for masking and stretching watercolour paper
Nippon Gold Tape is a rice paper tape that you can use to secure watercolour paper and mask off areas. The surface you stick it to is not damaged: when you peel the tape off, the watercolour paper stays intact.
The roll is 38 mm wide and 50 m long. The width gives you a decent bonding area along the edges of the paper, and the length is enough for many sheets or long masking edges.
How to use the tape
To stretch paper, place the watercolour paper on a board or a firm surface and stick the tape along all the edges so that part of it sticks to the paper and part to the surface. Press the tape down firmly so that it does not lift. This keeps the paper flat, and it stays smooth even when you use a lot of water. To mask off areas, press the edge down well so that no paint runs underneath and you get clean edges.
Removing the tape
Only peel the tape off once the paint has dried. Pull it slowly and at a shallow angle away from the paper. This protects the paper surface and the edges of your picture.
