The COLINEO filbert brush, series 1825, from da Vinci is a synthetic brush for oil and acrylic paint. It combines features of a flat and a round brush: you can use the tip for lines and details, and the width of the fibres to apply paint over larger areas.

The fibre blend consists of straight and wavy synthetic fibres of different lengths. They have extra fine tips, hold paint well, are elastic and form a precise point. This brings them close to the properties of Kolinsky sable hair. The brush is suitable for transparent glazes, washes and soft transitions.

Working with the filbert

For lines and details, work with the tip or the narrow edge of the brush. Cover larger areas with the broad side. For glazing, apply thinned paint in thin, transparent layers and let each layer dry before applying the next. Soft transitions are created by drawing the clean, slightly dampened brush across the boundary between two areas of wet paint. The most common mistake is too much paint on the brush, which makes the tip lose its shape. Wipe it off on the palette beforehand.

Choosing and caring for the brush

Smaller sizes suit fine details and small formats, larger ones suit applying paint over broad areas. Clean the brush straight after painting: rinse acrylic paint out with water before it dries, remove oil paint with brush cleaner and then wash with mild soap. Do not stand the brush in a container with the fibres pointing down, so the tip does not bend.
