da Vinci SPIN Series 5080 – wide flat brush for watercolour and washes

The da Vinci SPIN flat brush, series 5080, is a wide synthetic brush for watercolour painting. At 50 mm wide, it holds plenty of paint and water and covers large areas in a few strokes, for example backgrounds, skies or washes of colour.

The golden-brown, soft synthetic fibre blend is very absorbent and releases the paint evenly. The ferrule is made of rustproof stainless steel in DUROPLUS technology. The short, red and black polished handle sits comfortably in the hand. The brush is made in Germany.

Working with the wide flat brush

For even areas, such as a sky, stretch the paper and tilt the board slightly. Soak the brush in water beforehand, load it with plenty of diluted paint and draw it down in overlapping strokes from top to bottom. The paint collects as a bead along the lower edge and is picked up by the next stroke. Do not brush repeatedly over the still wet surface, otherwise pigments lift and blotches form.

What the brush is suitable for

The absorbency of the fibres suits washes and wet-in-wet techniques in watercolour and gouache. The brush is also suitable for acrylic paint if you apply it diluted. For fine details and outlines, use a narrower round or flat brush as well.
