da Vinci CASANEO Liner Brush Series 1290 – Watercolour Brush for Long Lines and Lettering

The CASANEO liner brush, series 1290, from da Vinci is a medium-length watercolour brush for long, even lines and lettering. According to the manufacturer, the extra soft synthetic fibres are exceptionally springy and hold an extremely large amount of paint. This means you can draw a line without having to re-dip in between.

The brush has a silver ferrule. The handle is short, hexagonal (Esagonalstiel) and polished black. With the short handle, you hold the brush close to the tip and so guide it with control.

Drawing long lines and lettering

Load the brush well with diluted watercolour paint, wipe off excess paint on the edge of the pan or palette and set the tip down. It is best to rest your hand on the paper and draw the line in one stroke with even pressure, rather than building it up in short sections. This keeps the stroke steady and the width even. For lettering, practise the upstrokes and downstrokes on a test sheet first, until the stroke width is right.

Which size to choose

The manufacturer offers the liner brush in sizes 0, 4, 8, 12 and 16. Choose the size from the options. As the size increases, the brush becomes wider and holds more paint. Smaller sizes suit fine lines and small lettering, larger ones suit broader, fuller strokes on larger formats.
