The CASANEO liner brush, series 5599, from da Vinci is a synthetic brush for thin, even lines, fine details and calligraphic painting. The extra-long, needle-fine tip is made of COLINEO synthetic fibres. The brush belly made of CASANEO fibre holds colour, so you can draw long strokes without having to re-dip in between.

Da Vinci recommends the brush especially for watercolour and fluid acrylic paints. The manufacturer lists paper, glass and fabric as painting surfaces, and it is also suitable for silk painting. According to da Vinci, the brush is vegan. The ferrule is silver-coloured, and the short wooden handle is polished black and hexagonal (Esagonal). This keeps the brush secure in the hand and stops it rolling off the table so easily.

How to draw long lines

Thin the paint until it flows but still covers, because thick paint drags in strings at the fine tip and breaks up. Pick up enough paint to fill the brush belly and draw the stroke in one go without stopping. Guide the brush with light pressure and turn it slightly between your fingers so the line stays even. Rest your hand or little finger on the paper to steady the line. Practise lines and curves on scrap paper first.

What it is suited to and what to bear in mind

With the liner brush you can paint outlines, branches, grasses, lettering or fine ornaments. A liner brush is not intended for large areas and gradients; a round or flat brush is better for those. After painting, rinse the brush thoroughly with water so that no paint dries in the ferrule. Lay it down flat instead of leaving it standing tip down in the water jar.
