da Vinci Series 1203 Script Liner Brush – extra-long brush for lines and lettering

The da Vinci series 1203 script liner is an extra-long lettering brush for fine, continuous lines and script in oil paint. The hairs are selected Tobolsky kolinsky sable hair, pointed. Long hairs hold plenty of paint and release it evenly, so you can draw long strokes in one go without having to reload. The brush is set in a silver ferrule and has a long, black polished wooden handle.

As well as lettering in oil paint with a maulstick, the script liner is also suitable for watercolour. The soft hair responds sensitively to your hand, so lines and letters have an even, smooth stroke. As it is made of animal hair, the brush is not vegan.

Painting lines and lettering

For even strokes, the paint must flow. Thin oil paint with a little painting medium until it has roughly the consistency of single cream. Thick paint is hard to pull with a script liner.

• Pull the brush through the paint and wipe it off to the side so that the hairs come together to a point.
• Rest your hand or the maulstick on a support so that the long handle stays steady.
• Pull the stroke with your arm from the shoulder, not just with your fingers, and carry it through without lifting off.
• Practise new letters or tendrils on a test sheet first.

Choice and care

Series 1203 has a long handle. Series 1203K with a short handle is a different brush. Choose the size from the options. For sizes given with zeros, the higher the number before the slash, the finer the brush. To care for the brush, wash it out thoroughly after painting, shape the hairs with your fingers and leave it to dry lying flat or hanging. Do not leave it standing hairs down in paint or water, otherwise the hairs will bend.
