da Vinci Series 1200 Script Liner – Lettering Brush for Long, Fine Lines

The da Vinci Series 1200 script liner is a lettering brush for drawing long, even lines, for lettering, fine strokes and stripes. The hair is selected Tobolsky Kolinsky red sable, medium length and pointed, set in a silver ferrule. This brush is size 2 with a brush width of 1.30 mm.

The long, tapering hair bundle holds plenty of paint and releases it evenly over a long distance. You can draw lines in a single stroke without having to reload part-way. Red sable hair is springy and returns to a point after the stroke. The long, black polished wooden handle keeps your hand slightly back and helps you guide the brush steadily.

Drawing long lines

Thin the paint until it flows well but still covers. Paint that is too thick cannot be drawn evenly with the long tip. Load the paint along the full length of the hair and wipe it off on the palette so that the tip keeps a fine shape. Hold the handle loosely, towards the end, rest the edge of your hand on the surface and draw the stroke in one movement at a steady speed. If the brush hesitates or you stop part-way, visible thickening appears. Practise the movement on a test sheet first.

Size and care

Size 2 with a brush width of 1.30 mm gives narrow to medium lines. This is a good starting point for lettering and fine stripes. Rinse the brush thoroughly after use, with a suitable brush cleaner for oil paint and then with mild brush soap and water. Shape the tip with your fingers, leave the brush to dry lying flat and never stand it in water with the hairs down.
