LYKKE JUMBO Beechwood Ball Winder – Winding Yarn Neatly with a Wooden Winder
The LYKKE JUMBO ball winder in beechwood winds yarn by hand crank into even balls with a centre strand, known as centre-pull balls. You can use it for skeins or for yarn you have recovered from unravelled knitting.
The clamp fixes the winder to the edge of a table, so you have one hand free for the yarn. The wooden body is handmade.
Winding a ball
The steps are written for skeins. If the yarn is already wound, start directly at the end of the thread.
- Place the skein loosely over the swift or ask a second person to hold it, so the yarn can be drawn off without tension.
- Attach the clamp to the tabletop and check that the winder is held firmly.
- Place the end of the yarn on the spindle and turn the crank steadily, not too fast.
- Guide the yarn loosely with your free hand, without pulling. Too much tension makes the ball hard and the yarn loses elasticity.
- Slide the finished ball off the spindle and work with the yarn from the centre.
How much yarn does the winder hold?
The winder is designed for up to approx. 113 g of yarn. Wind larger quantities into several balls. It also helps if you have unravelled a knitted piece and want to tidy the yarn for reuse: instead of a tangle of thread, you get a manageable ball that stores well.
