Clover Tailor's Awl 486/W – widen buttonholes and shape corners

The Clover tailor's awl 486/W (tapered) is what you need when you want to widen small openings in fabric or leather, or push sewn corners out neatly, for example on buttonholes.

The point tapers gradually. This lets you enlarge an opening step by step and control the size well as you go. The awl is smaller than a pen and sits comfortably in the hand for fine work.

Using the tailor's awl

On woven fabrics, gently slide the point between the threads rather than piercing firmly, and widen the opening in small steps. This is kinder to the weave. Work just as carefully on leather and check the size as you go. For corners, press gently into the corner from the inside with the point, without piercing the seam. The tip is sharp, so work on a firm surface and watch your fingers.
