Modern Options rust oxidiser – real rust effect with iron primer

The Modern Options rust oxidiser from the Sophisticated Finishes series creates real rust on decorative objects, picture frames and upcycling projects when used with the iron primer. It is not a painted colour effect: a chemical reaction produces a rusted surface after a short time, suitable for industrial-design and vintage looks.

The 472 ml (16 oz) bottle is intended for wood, metal, card, picture frames, plaster and ceramic. According to the manufacturer, Sophisticated Finishes products can be used on almost any paintable surface. You should always prime porous and very glossy surfaces first. The oxidiser is also available in a smaller 118 ml bottle. The 472 ml bottle is the right size if you are planning larger objects or several projects.

How the rust develops

The oxidiser only works on the iron primer. Apply the primer first, let it dry and then treat it with the oxidiser.

• Apply the iron primer in two coats
• Leave to dry for 12 hours
• Apply the oxidiser with a brush
• Leave to dry for at least 2 hours
• Repeat until you reach the degree of rust you want

Controlling the rust shade and practising

The rust effect appears within a few hours. According to the manufacturer, the longer the last coat of iron primer dries, the darker the rust becomes. Before starting your actual project, do a few trials on a test piece to get used to the process and find your preferred rust shade.
