Modern Options Rust Oxidiser – real rust on wood, metal and ceramic

The Modern Options rust oxidiser from the Sophisticated Finishes range creates real rust when used with the Modern Options Iron Primer. It is a chemical reaction, not a painted colour effect. The bottle contains 118 ml. It is suitable for wood, metal, cardboard, picture frames, plaster and ceramic. According to the manufacturer, Sophisticated Finishes products can be used on practically any paintable surface, including concrete, plastic and glass.

It gives decorative objects, upcycling projects and industrial-design pieces an authentic rusted surface. The oxidiser is also available in a larger 472 ml bottle. The 118 ml bottle suits first trials and smaller objects.

How the rust effect develops

The rust forms through a reaction between the Iron Primer and the oxidiser, so you need both products. The process:

• Apply the Iron Primer in two coats
• Leave to dry for 12 hours
• Apply the oxidiser with a brush
• Leave to dry for at least 2 hours
• Repeat until the desired degree of rust is reached; the rust effect develops within a few hours

Tips for an even result

According to the manufacturer, you control the shade of rust through the primer: the longer the last coat of Iron Primer dries, the darker the rust becomes. According to the manufacturer, porous or very glossy surfaces must be primed first. Before starting your actual project, run a few tests on a sample piece to get to know the process.
