Modern Options Rust Iron Primer – base for a real rust effect

The Modern Options iron primer (formerly Sophisticated Finishes) is the base for real rust on wood, metal, card, picture frames, plaster and ceramics. You apply it as a primer and then trigger a chemical reaction with the Modern Options oxidiser. The result is real rust rather than a painted imitation, suited to decorative objects and upcycling in a vintage or industrial style.

The oxidiser is not included and is a separate product. Without the oxidiser, a coarse-grained iron surface remains. You control the degree of rust yourself: the more often you apply the oxidiser, the stronger the rust becomes.

How the rust develops step by step

Clean the surface thoroughly beforehand so that the primer adheres well. Shake the bottle vigorously before use; the mixing ball inside helps with this. The primer is not thinned.

• Apply the iron primer in two coats.
• Leave to dry for 12 hours.
• Apply the oxidiser with a brush.
• Leave to react for at least 2 hours.
• Repeat the process until the desired degree of rust is reached.

Test patch and choice of size

Make a test patch on the same material beforehand. Wood, plaster, ceramics and metal absorb the primer differently, so you can see in advance how strong the rust will be on your surface. The 118 ml bottle is suitable for test patches and smaller objects. For larger projects, the same primer is also available in 472 ml.
