Modern Options Iron Primer – effect primer for real rust

Modern Options iron primer (the brand was formerly called Sophisticated Finishes) is an effect primer that creates real rust on wood, metal, cardboard, picture frames, plaster and ceramic. Used with the Modern Options oxidiser, it reacts chemically and produces an authentic rust look. It suits home decor and upcycling in a vintage or industrial style. This is real chemical rust, not an imitation.

The oxidiser is a separate product and is not included. You need it for the rust to form at all. The bottle contains 472 ml (16 OZ). The primer is also available in a smaller 118 ml bottle.

Creating the rust effect

Clean the surface thoroughly first. For better adhesion, you can apply a base coat of primer. Shake the bottle well before use; the mixing ball inside helps with this. Do not dilute the primer.

• Apply the iron primer in two coats
• Leave to dry for 12 hours
• Apply the oxidiser with a brush
• Leave to react for at least 2 hours
• Repeat the oxidiser application until you reach the desired degree of rust

Controlling and testing the rust level

You can control the effect to suit your taste: each pass of oxidiser makes the rust stronger, so you can stop at the shade you like. Make a test patch on the same material beforehand, as the result depends on the surface. Without oxidiser, you are left with a coarse-grained iron surface. If you only want to treat small decorative pieces or picture frames, the small 118 ml bottle is often enough. For larger surfaces or several projects, choose the 472 ml bottle.
