Faber-Castell TK 9400 Clutch Pencil 5B – soft lead for drawing and sketching

The TK 9400 from Faber-Castell is a clutch pencil with a 5B lead (Ø 3.15 mm) for writing, drawing and sketching. The hexagonal barrel has ergonomic grip grooves, and the strong collet holds the lead firmly. It does not wobble even when you press harder.

The barrel is slim and well balanced, with the centre of gravity towards the drawing tip. This helps you keep the pencil steady during longer sketches. The hardness marking shows you at a glance which lead is fitted. That is handy if you use several TK pencils in different grades.

What is the 5B grade suited to?

5B is a soft lead. It gives dark, rich lines and can be used from light to heavy pressure. That suits sketches, shading and expressive drawings. Soft leads smudge more easily, so place a sheet of paper under your hand while you work. The TK 9400 is also available with 4B and 6B leads. 4B is slightly firmer, 6B softer still.

Sharpening and refilling

You can sharpen the thick lead to suit your needs, with a fine point for lines or a broader one for filling areas. A sharpener and eraser are not included with the pencil. When the lead is used up, refill the pencil with TK 9071 leads. According to Faber-Castell, these are available in grades 4B to 6B.
