The Faber-Castell Pitt Graphite Set contains 26 pieces for drawing, sketching and shading in a metal tin: pencils from 2H to 9B, jumbo pencils, Graphite Aquarelle pencils, Pure pencils, graphite sticks, plus erasers, a brush and accessories. One set covers sketching, hatching, soft gradients, watercolour effects and details.

The pencils are break-resistant thanks to the special bonding (SV technology), the wood is FSC-certified and the pencils are finished with water-based lacquer. The metal tin keeps everything together and is easy to take with you for drawing on the go.

Which pencil for which purpose?

The grades range from 2H to 9B. H pencils are harder and give light, fine lines, while B pencils are softer and give darker, richer tones. This lets you build up light-to-dark gradients in fine steps.

• Castell 9000 (2H to 8B): for sketching, preliminary drawing, hatching and details
• Castell 9000 Jumbo (2B, 4B, 8B): thicker pencils for broad strokes and larger areas
• Graphite Aquarelle (2B, 4B, 8B): strokes can be blended into tonal areas with a wet brush
• Pure pencils (3B, 6B, 9B) and graphite sticks (2B, 6B, 9B): for soft, dark passages and strong accents

Shading

Start with a hard pencil and light pressure for outlines and the lightest tones. Build up darker areas gradually with softer pencils over the top. Use the paper stump to blend transitions softly and the kneadable eraser to lift out highlights without roughening the paper. For watercolour effects, draw with a Graphite Aquarelle pencil and spread the strokes with a damp brush; use paper that can take water. The sanding block re-sharpens the leads, and the double sharpener sharpens the standard and jumbo pencils.
