How to print with the gel printing plate

The technique is simple and needs little equipment.

• Put a little paint on the plate and spread it thinly and evenly with a roller or a brush.
• Lay stencils, stamps, leaves or other flat materials on the paint.
• Place the paper on top and gently smooth it down with your hand.
• Peel the paper off: the stencil leaves a masked-out design and the texture shows in the paint film.

Tips for even prints

Applying the paint too thickly is the most common mistake: the paint squeezes out from under the paper and details fill in. Acrylic paint dries quickly, so work fast or use small amounts of paint. After the first print there is often paint left on the plate, which you can use to pull a lighter second print. The paper should be smooth and not too thin, so that it does not cockle.
