Schmincke refined walnut oil – pale binder for oil paints
Schmincke walnut oil is a pure, pale, refined oil made from shelled walnuts. You use it as a binder additive for grinding non-white oil paints, and as a component of oil painting auxiliaries.
Compared with linseed oil, walnut oil dries somewhat more slowly and yellows less. This matters most with pale colours, where later yellowing would be noticeable. The bottle contains 60 ml of pure walnut oil.
Using walnut oil
To grind paint, add the oil to the pigment in small amounts and work both together on a glass slab until you have an even paste. How much oil you need depends greatly on the type and amount of pigment. Work up to it step by step and do a test first on a sample piece. As an additive to oil painting auxiliaries, the walnut oil also acts as a binder.
- Intended for non-white oil paints
- Adjust the amount of oil to the pigment; if in doubt, start sparingly
- Allow more time between layers because of the slower drying
Cleaning and storage
Clean your tools straight after use with turpentine (Schmincke art. no. 50024 or 50102), white spirit (50019) or brush cleaner (50051 or 50052). Close the bottle again immediately after use and store it in a cool, dry place.
