Schmincke Acrylic Fluid Medium, Silk Matt – More Transparency, Longer Working Time

Schmincke Acrylic Fluid Medium is a smooth-flowing additive for acrylic painting. You mix it into acrylic paints when you want them to be more transparent, dry more slowly or adhere better. It dries almost clear with a silk matt finish.

The added transparency is useful for glazing and for working in larger areas: you build up colour in thin, translucent layers without simply thinning it with water. The slower drying gives you more time to blend transitions. Water is used for thinning.

Using the fluid medium

Shake the bottle well before use. Then add the medium to the acrylic paint on the palette in small amounts and mix it in thoroughly. The more you add, the more translucent the paint becomes, which suits glazes and soft layers of colour. The medium also improves the adhesion of the paint.

• Start by adding a little and test the mixing ratio on your painting surface
• For glazes, apply thinly and let each layer dry
• Wash brushes out with water straight after painting, as dried acrylic is not water-soluble

Things to bear in mind

The medium slows drying. For thick layers, allow a little more waiting time before you rework the area or apply the next glaze. Because it dries silk matt, the sheen stays subtle. A test swatch on your chosen painting surface shows you beforehand how the colour and finish work together.
