Schmincke Ox Gall – natural wetting agent for watercolour and gouache

Schmincke ox gall is a natural wetting agent for watercolour and gouache painting. It reduces the surface tension of the paint and so improves how the colour flows on greasy surfaces.

It degreases painting surfaces and works as a flow improver for all water-based paints. It is also used in the crackle varnish technique. It also degreases the lacquered mixing palettes of metal paintboxes, where paint would otherwise pull together into droplets.

How to use ox gall

Ox gall is miscible with water. Shake the bottle before use and put only a little onto a separate palette. Dilute it there with water, then mix it into the watercolours. Use it sparingly, as even small amounts change how the paint flows. Do a test on your painting surface first, especially on smooth or greasy areas.

Cleaning and storage

Clean brushes and other tools with water straight after use, with water and soap if needed. Close the bottle immediately after use, store it in a cool, dry place and protect it from frost. If the ox gall has flocculated during storage, this does not affect its use.
