Schmincke AQUA-Shine – shimmering pearlescent effects for watercolour

Schmincke AQUA-Shine (art. no. 50720025) gives your watercolours a pearly, shimmering sheen. You can mix the effect medium with watercolour paints or apply it neat over the dry paint layer. It is ready to use and remains water-soluble, so you can work with it just like your watercolour paints.

You control the strength of the effect through dilution: the more water, the weaker the pearlescent sheen. For a clear shimmer, use the medium neat or with only a little water. Subtle effects are achieved with greater dilution. It contains gum arabic solution, pearlescent pigments, additives and water.

Working with AQUA-Shine

Shake the bottle well before each use so that the pearlescent pigments are evenly distributed. Then proceed as follows:

• Mixing: Add AQUA-Shine to transparent watercolour paints on a palette and apply the mixture as usual.
• Applying neat: Apply the medium over a watercolour layer that has already dried, for example for shimmering highlights, wings, water surfaces or cloud edges.
• Never mix in the pan: The medium must not get into your watercolour pans. Always mix separately on the palette.
• After painting: Clean brushes and tools immediately with water or with water and soap, and close the bottle again straight away.

Surfaces and tips

AQUA-Shine is suitable for watercolour paper and for surfaces that you have prepared with AQUA-Grund, fine or coarse, such as canvas, wood or cardboard. As the medium slightly slows drying, thick applications take a little longer to dry. A quick test on a scrap sheet shows you how strong the shimmer is on your paper and with your colours. Store the bottle in a cool, dry place and protect it from frost.
