The Faber-Castell Goldfaber Aqua watercolour pencils in pastel shades are a set of 12 coloured pencils in a metal tin. You can draw with them dry like ordinary colouring pencils, or turn the lines into watercolour effects with water and a brush. The 3.3 mm lead is fully water-soluble and gives a soft, richly pigmented stroke. Faber-Castell rates the lightfastness as excellent.

The delicate pastel colours suit light, soft subjects, sketches, hatching and gentle colour gradients. Thanks to the Sekural bonding (SV), the lead is break-resistant and sharpens well in all standard sharpeners. The metal tin keeps the 12 pencils together and protects them in your bag.

Working with the watercolour pencils

Start by drawing dry, just as you would with colouring pencils. Then go over the lines with a damp brush, and the colour dissolves into a watercolour-style wash. With plenty of water the transitions become soft; with little water the hatching stays visible. Alternatively, pick up colour straight from the lead with a wet brush and paint with it. Use a paper that can take moisture, otherwise it will buckle. Do not dip the pencils themselves in water.
