The Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pen Black set contains four black ink pens with different nibs for sketches, drawings, layouts, fashion drawings and illustrations. The ink is pigmented, waterproof and permanent. According to Faber-Castell, it is highly lightfast, odourless, acid-free and pH-neutral. With this set you can switch between line widths, calligraphy and brush strokes without changing colour.

The ink does not bleed through the paper. That is handy if you want to carry on drawing on the reverse side or work in a sketchbook. The set is well suited to contours and outlines, for example in comic and manga drawings.

Which nib for what?

All four pens have the same black ink and differ only in the nib:

• 1.5 mm: even, broad line for bold contours and frames
• C (Calligraphy): calligraphy nib for lettering and lines with varying width
• B (brush nib): for lively strokes that get thinner or broader depending on pressure
• FM (fine brush nib): for finer brush strokes and details

Tips for working

As the ink is waterproof and permanent, you can go over it with watercolours once it has dried, without the lines running. Let the ink dry thoroughly first. With the brush nibs you control the stroke width through pressure: light pressure gives fine lines, more pressure gives broader ones. The series includes other sets, such as Manga Black, Sepia or Warm Grey IV, as well as single pens.

The pens are also a good introduction to ink drawing. This medium has long been popular with artists and graphic designers because it can be combined with many other painting techniques.
