AMI sanding block – lead sharpener for fine points

The AMI sanding block is a lead sharpening block with grit 150 sandpaper. You use it to re-sharpen the lead of pencils, graphite pencils and pastel pencils and bring it to a fine point, which a pencil sharpener alone cannot achieve.

Weighing around 10 g, the block fits in any pencil case and drawing box.

Sharpening the lead

First sharpen the wood with a pencil sharpener so that a little of the lead is exposed. Then draw the lead over the sandpaper at a shallow angle, turning the pencil slowly as you go. This gives an evenly round tip that tapers finely. Work with light pressure, as soft pastel and graphite leads break easily if you press too hard. Afterwards, wipe the sanding dust off the lead so that it does not smudge on the paper.

What the block is used for

The block is suited to very fine sharpening work, for example for details and fine lines in drawings. It complements the pencil sharpener: the sharpener shapes the wood, the sandpaper shapes the lead. Grit 150 is intended for touching up the point between sharpenings.
