Faber-Castell Pitt charcoal pencils – three grades for sketching and drawing
The Pitt charcoal pencil set from Faber-Castell contains three natural charcoal pencils in the grades soft, medium and hard. You can use them for quick sketches, studies and larger areas. The line is bluish-black. According to the manufacturer, the pencils are grease- and oil-free.
The charcoal blends and smudges easily, so you can soften areas and create gradations. Mistakes are easy to correct, and you can draw over the finished work again and again. The lacquer on the pencils is water-based, and the wood is PEFC-certified.
Which grade for what?
With the set you can try the three grades side by side. This helps you find out which grade suits your drawing style. Softer charcoal generally gives darker, broader lines and smudges particularly easily. Harder charcoal is better suited to finer lines and initial outlines. You can also combine the grades: start loosely with hard, then deepen the shadows with soft.
Working with the pencils
Sharpen the pencils with a craft knife or a sharpener and work with light pressure, as charcoal breaks easily. To blend, use your finger, a blending stump or a cloth. Charcoal drawings remain prone to smudging. You can protect finished sheets with a fixative.
