Faber-Castell Pitt Pastel Pencils Browns, Sanguine – Set of 3

Pitt pastel pencils in browns – 3 oil-free artists' pencils for sketching and detail

This Faber-Castell set contains three Pitt pastel pencils in warm browns: sanguine (no. 188), dark sepia (no. 175) and walnut brown (no. 177). You can use them for preliminary drawings, outlines, studies and detailed pastel drawings.

Pitt pastel pencils are highly pigmented artists' pencils without waxes or oils. They give rich, saturated strokes and blend extremely well. The tones merge softly into one another, and the pencils complement pastel chalk when you want to work more finely than chalk allows.

Working with the browns

The lead is 4.3 mm thick. Sharpen it with a scalpel or a sharpener when you need fine lines, and use the side of the lead for broader, soft areas. Use dark sepia for outlines and shaded areas, walnut brown for mid-tones, and sanguine to give studies of faces, hands or figures the classic reddish tone. Blend the strokes with your finger or a paper stump; this gives drawings added expression. Pastel adheres better to paper with a slight texture than to smooth paper.

Fixing and combining

According to Faber-Castell, fixing can be kept to a minimum so that the colour brilliance is retained; the pigments are colourfast against fixatives. As the pencils are oil- and wax-free, they combine well with pastel chalks: lay in the areas with the chalk, then work up details and outlines with the pencil.
