Conté Fusain Charcoal Pencil – Intense Black for Sketching
The Fusain-Charcoal pencil from Conté à Paris is a wood-cased charcoal pencil for sketches and studies. It draws a rich, intense black with soft application and leaves a dry, dense line. According to Conté, the lead is very break-resistant, so you can also carry it in your portfolio or sketchbook.
The pencils are available in grades from H to 2B. Choose your grade from the options.
Which grade to choose
The softer the grade, the darker the line and the richer the application. H and HB suit initial outlines, contours and lighter tones. B and 2B give deeper blacks for shadows and accents. A drawing is often built up with two grades: first lay in the work with the lighter pencil, then go over the darkest areas.
Working with the charcoal pencil
Sharpen the pencil with a sharpener or knife and draw with light pressure until the shape is established. You can rub areas with your finger or a paper stump to create soft transitions. As charcoal only adheres loosely to paper, protect finished sheets with fixative or place tissue paper between them. The pencil can be blended with sanguine and sepia pencils if you want to add warm tones to your sketch.
