Botz Stoneware Glaze 9883 Schwarzblaueffekt – glossy blue-black with light effects
Botz stoneware glaze 9883 Schwarzblaueffekt is a liquid, glossy blue-black effect glaze for ceramics in the stoneware range of 1220 to 1280 °C. Depending on the firing temperature and how thickly it is applied, it shows subtle to pronounced light effects, and running effects when applied more thickly.
When fired within the firing range, stoneware becomes vitrified and frost-proof, so it does not absorb water. If you want to make deliberate use of the running effects, apply the glaze unevenly. If you want the piece to look calmer, apply it evenly and fairly thinly.
How the glaze looks at different temperatures
The colour effect changes with the firing temperature. Botz recommends 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold.
- 1220 °C: subtle blue-black glaze with small light effects
- 1250 °C: blue-black glaze with light effects, attractive running effects when applied more thickly
- 1280 °C: blue-black glaze with light running effects; applied very thinly and on edges it turns brown-toned
Application and firing
Stir the glaze well and apply 2 to 3 coats with a brush, preferably just 2. Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. Then fire the piece within the firing range of 1220 to 1280 °C. At 1280 °C, apply only 2 coats, because the glaze runs more at that temperature.
Controlling the running
When applied thickly, the glaze tends to run a little. This is the effect that makes it interesting, but it can also reach the kiln shelf. Apply it more thinly on the lower third of the piece and leave the foot unglazed. Also protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash. A test piece on your own clay will show you beforehand how application thickness and temperature work out for you.
