Botz PRO 9312 Onyxschwarz – black liquid glaze for earthenware and stoneware

Botz PRO 9312 Onyxschwarz is a ready-to-use, glossy black brush-on glaze for earthenware and stoneware. Its wide firing range of 1,020–1,280 °C means you can use one glaze at earthenware, early-sintering and stoneware temperatures, so you don't need to buy a different glaze for every clay.

The finish changes with the firing temperature and with your clay. A test piece on your own clay body will show you beforehand how Onyxschwarz looks for you. The tin contains 800 ml. Botz also recommends combining the PRO glazes with Botz Unidekor.

Application and firing

Stir the glaze well and brush it with a soft brush onto the bisque-fired, dust-free clay body. Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. For the Botz PRO series, the number of coats and the finish depend on the firing temperature.

• From approx. 1,020 °C (earthenware): 2–3 coats, the glaze becomes coloured and almost opaque
• Around 1,150 °C (early-sintering clays): 2 coats, the finish becomes more semi-transparent
• High fire/stoneware, also porcelain at 1,250 °C: 2 coats, glassy and semi-transparent

Avoiding runs

Botz PRO tends to run when applied thickly, especially at higher temperatures from 1,150 °C. It is therefore better to apply several thin coats rather than one thick one. Leave a strip at the foot of the piece unglazed so that nothing can run onto the kiln shelf. You can also protect the shelf with kiln wash.

Choosing from the PRO range

Onyxschwarz belongs to the PRO range alongside 9310 Malachit, 9311 Topasblau, 9313 Pyrit Weiß and 9314 Rauchquarz. The glaze is available in 800 ml and in 200 ml. The large tin is worthwhile if you are glazing several pieces or larger surfaces.
