Botz PRO 9310 Malachit – liquid glaze in deep dark bottle green
Botz PRO 9310 Malachit is a ready-to-use liquid glaze in a deep dark green, similar to classic bottle green. It is suitable for earthenware and stoneware and can be used across a wide firing range of 1020–1280 °C. The finish is glossy. Botz recommends Malachit for tableware and drinkware, and the glaze is also suitable for raku.
The wide firing range means you can use one pot of this green for both earthenware and stoneware. The result changes with the temperature, so it is worth making a test piece from your own clay. According to Botz, the 800 ml pot corresponds to approx. 1.4–1.8 kg of mixed powder glaze, which helps you plan quantities for several pieces. The glaze can be combined with BOTZ Unidekor.
Application and firing
Stir the glaze well before use and brush it onto a clean, dust-free piece. Let each coat dry before applying the next. The number of coats depends on the firing temperature:
- Earthenware from approx. 1020 °C, for example 1050 °C: 2–3 coats, the colour becomes intense and almost opaque
- Early-sintering clays at around 1150 °C: 2 coats, the surface becomes more semi-transparent
- High fire/stoneware at around 1250 °C: 2 coats, the glaze turns glassy and semi-transparent, also on porcelain
Avoiding runs
If applied thickly, the glaze tends to run, especially in high firing from 1150 °C. Apply it more thinly on the lower third of the piece and leave the foot unglazed. Protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash in case some glaze does run down.
