Mayco SP-260 Speckled Silver Lining – glossy speckled glaze with red and black specks
Mayco Stroke & Coat SP-260 Speckled Silver Lining is an effect glaze for earthenware and stoneware, supplied in a 236 ml jar. It has red and black specks and fires glossy, so you do not need an additional clear glaze. The consistency is slightly viscous, so it goes on evenly with a brush.
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe after firing. The AP (Approved Product) seal means, according to ACMI, that the product is exempt from hazard labelling.
Application and coverage
The number of coats controls the result: one coat looks translucent, while 2–3 coats give full coverage. Let each coat dry before applying the next, otherwise the application will smudge. Stroke & Coat is generally applied to damp clay or to bisque-fired earthenware and bisque-fired stoneware.
Firing and colour effect
According to Mayco, the Speckled glazes are formulated for cone 06/05 (approx. 998 to 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The firing range is cone 06 to 10, in oxidation or reduction. The result looks different depending on the temperature:
- Low firing (cone 06): the specks stay clearly visible and give strong contrast.
- High firing (at cone 6, approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart, oxidation): the glaze turns transparent and medium blue, and the specks run and bleed slightly.
Which firing is right for you?
If you want clear red and black dots, fire low. At high temperatures, on the other hand, you get a soft, flowing effect. Test the glaze first on a test tile made from your own clay, especially if you are using it for a high firing, because the specks run and the base colour changes there.
